Tis Pity He's a Writer

Twitterspeak for Dummies

It was recently the 30-year anniversary of the invention of emoticon. I never knew that’s what those things  were called. I always referred to them as those aggravating little yellow faces. Believe it or not, they were invented by an actual grown up – a scientist no less. Working for Carnegie Mellon. I can’t help wondering if Carnegie Mellon knew what he was spending his time on.

They’re kind of a shorthand. Like those annoying acronyms that help Twitter tweeters keep within their allotted number of characters. You know like OMG, WTF, and LOL. I’m still confused about LOL. Is it lots of luck, lots of love, lots of laughs, lots of laundry?

Then there’s RU as in “How RU? “RU lonesome tonight?” “RUFC?”

I don’t use emoticons. I’m above that. Besides, I don’t know where to find them. What’s this?
😀 😳 🙄 😆 😡 ❓ “!” 😀 😳 🙄 😆 😀 😉 😦 😡 ❓ “!”

Oh my God, what the fuck and lots of laundry.

One emoticon is worth 10,000 writers. WTFAE (Einstein said that).

I wish there was an emoticon that said “I’m being satirical, idiots!”

Yeah, but isn’t the fun of satire fooling some of the people all the time?
